On Sunday, December 15, fierce fighting broke out at SPLA Army Headquarters in South Sudan’s capital city of Juba. Nuer, Dinka and Shilluk elements within the military barracks clashed over results of the SPLM National Leadership Council (NLC) meeting held over that weekend.
SPLM Chairman and South Sudan President Salva Kiir accused ousted former Vice President Riek Machar of a coup attempt. The attempt failed and Kiir put the entire city on lockdown, shutting down the airport and deploying his forces throughout the city.
Pressure has been mounting for some time since Kiir’s sacking of VP Machar and most of his cabinet in July, 2013. At this writing, a dusk-to-dawn curfew is still in effect.
Please pray with us for a just resolution to this conflict and the protection of God’s people in the midst of this very turbulent and difficult situation.
Please also pray for the continued safety of our staff in South Sudan as they continue to carry out PPF’s mission of demonstrating Active Compassion for the persecuted. We have many outreaches currently in operation and the current security crisis is causing some major logistical challenges.
Thank you for your prayers and continued partnership with this important work.
